OSU Students Make Trip to United Nations

UNA-USA Columbus Chapter sent two of its interns to New York, New York to participate in a unique opportunity available to youth at the United Nations Headquarters. According to the Global Employment Trends 2012, over 12% of the youth population is unemployed; double the unemployment rate of adults. To help decrease this increasing trend, the United Nations' Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) called upon the world's youth to gather at the United Nations Headquarters in New York to discuss and help fix the global problems and fears of the current youth unemployment situation on the morning of May 4, 2012.
The program, titled Creating a Sustainable Future: Empowering Youth with Better Job Opportunities, was designed for young adults between the ages of 15-32 to discuss the topics of "Training and Education to Facilitate Access to Job Markets" and "Promoting Youth Employment - Creating Green Jobs." Among the political leaders who were present included Mr. Luis Alfonso de Alba (VP of the ECOSOC and permanent representative of Mexico to the UN), Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro (Deputy Secretary-General of the UN), Mr. Sha Zukang (Under Secretary-General of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs), and many other young and empowering speakers. Mr. Luis Alfonso de Alba intends on making this conference an annual event, encouraging young people around the world to voice their opinions on matters that are of timely relevance to their well being.
Hailey Hopper, a senior at The Ohio State University, and Lauren Kowalik, a junior at The Ohio State University, were among the number of students from all over the world to express their beliefs and experiences concerning youth unemployment. "It's hard to beat the computer and try to get to a human being when looking for a job", a comment by Lauren to the forum, "you have to put yourself out there, and interact directly with employers, instead of relying on emails." For more information,  view the links below, including a webcast of the forum. If interested for next year, keep an eye out for this event on the United Nations Economic and Social Committee website.
